colour for creative industries

“Colour is the most fundamental aspect of design and the one that has the most impact, connecting with our audience in a subliminal way that is difficult to put into words.”

I have been using colour in my creative practice for over 20 yrs as a designer, artist and colour consultant and know from my own experience how understanding applied colour psychology can transform the way you work with colour to create more meaningful connections with your client. Working with psychologist Angela Wright in 2018 (I am a ‘Colour Affects’ certified consultant) opened my eyes to an aspect of colour theory I had barely understood. It changed my own relationship with colour and the way I work in both my colour consultancy and as an artist.

Colour as Communicator

We all connect with colour everyday even if we aren’t aware of it - colour is everywhere - it’s how we make sense of what we see and how we experience our world. It’s only after the automatic, emotional response to the colours before us do we then respond in a conscious and subjective way.

When we create something for our audience we are communicating an expression of ideas, emotion and beauty. As visual artists we use colour to do this. If you are a business owner who uses colour in any way then colour will be used to connect with your client or sell your product. architects, graphic designers, gardeners, florist, interior designers, marketing, branding, makeup, stylists - all use colour in some way to sell a product or service.

Colour is fundamental in how we talk to our audience

“It’s an element of design that can be used effectively to enforce an underlying message and is far more objective than we think.”

Angela Wright

Most people who work with colour will already have good intuitive skills but understanding the fundamentals of applied colour psychology will give you the language and reasoning behind those choices taking away some of that subjective response that can cause so much angst. You will learn a framework that will help you make quicker decisions around colour, give you confidence in your colour choices, and be able to talk to your client in a clear concise way.

FACT - most people who work with colour in creative industries have little or no training in colour psychology and how it can be applied to their working practice.

There are many misconceptions surrounding colour psychology but once you begin to uncover your own connection to colour the frame work of applied colour psychology sits with you and you have it forever. It can impact the way you live, shop, dress, work, create, decorate and design.

“there is a real magic in instinctive but intentional colour work supported by theory”

This is a clear, scientifically developed way of looking at colour that has been proved time again to work in practice. Combining your own intuitive skills and applied colour psychology will be a game changer for anyone who works with colour in their business.

The bottom line for your business is a more considered informed approach to colour that immediately connects to your client or client brief.
